How A Fiberglass Mold Makes The Amazing Range Of Fiberglass Products

Fiberglass mold technology is necessary to produce the huge variety of products for which fiberglass can be used. This extremely versatile and durable material has a multitude of uses, in the domestic home, in the workplace, out on the road, or on the water. It has proven to be remarkably effective in reducing domestic heating bills to the lowest possible level, with the way it can reduce heat loss when used as part of window frames and doors. It has allowed swimming pool manufacturers to create a product they are happy to offer a lifetime guarantee on, and it has given vehicle repairers the ideal material from which to make replacement body parts.

Fiberglass is one of those material which can be extremely malleable, if it is mixed with the right resin in the right circumstances, and if it is at a high enough temperature. It is this fluidity which creates the need for a mold in the first place. Once the resin and the fiberglass have cooled down, they become set rigid, and they have enormous strength. This strength allows fiberglass to be used for doors, boats, and even storage sheds where heavy duty materials are stored.

To make a fiberglass mold, you need to have what is known as a plug. This plug is nothing more than an exact replica of the item you wish the mold to create. The gel coat from which the mold is made can then be applied to the plug, but it is vital to include a lubricant to allow the mold to come free from the plug at the end of the manufacturing process. This lubricant is usually some form of wax, although there are other materials which can be used. Wax is the one least likely to cause any damage to the mold once it is removed.

The fiberglass mold needs to have a roller applied to it to remove air bubbles before it is removed and used. If this was not done, the mold would lose strength, and this could lead to anything produced in the mold being warped, or at least losing some of its dimensions. Layers of fiberglass itself are applied to the outside of the mold, in order to increase its strength. Once the fiberglass resin has set, the mold can be removed, and wedges are used to take the mold off the plug.

The fiberglass mold is, of course, a negative version of the object which it is intended to manufacture and distribute. These molds can be used to manufacture solid items, by making them in two separate halves. Once one product has been produced in this way, it is possible to create further molds and bring in an element of mass production. The greatest challenge, of course, is how you automate the removal of the finished item from the fiberglass mold.
