Make Your Doors And Windows Natural With A Fiberglass Wood Finish

Fiberglass wood finishes can give you the opportunity to use the most effective insulating material yet devised, and still keep a traditional aesthetic finish. There are still many people who find the appearance of wood far more comforting and homely than the more practical materials such as metal and plastic. The problem with this, of course, is that wood is prone to warp and bend over time. This has been made worse in recent years by the increase in temperature due to modern heating.

Wood also has the disadvantage of being a fire risk, and that is a very good reason for seeking an alternative. Another one is the large heating bills caused by wooden windows. Once the wood has warped to a significant degree, it is inevitable that heat will escape into the outside air. At a time when the world supply of fuel is in such a precarious state, this needs to be guarded against. There has been a move in recent decades away from wood, largely for these very reasons.

The problem is that this move has been largely to aluminum and plastic. Aluminum windows can be effective, but they always remain metallic in appearance. They need a “thermal break” to be effective, and even then their efficiency level falls way short of fiberglass. Plastic windows have many disadvantages. Although they can be painted, they are never going to be attractive to look at, and they are scarcely any better than wood in terms of stopping warping. Fiberglass is the logical material for window frames. It contains glass fibers, and expands and contracts in unison with the window it houses.

With doors, wood can be even more of a problem. There is a far greater area to be affected by any warping, and this can even provide a security risk by making it easier for an intruder to break in. A fiberglass wood finish can be remarkably effective. Not only is it possible to make fiberglass products which are identical in appearance to virtually any type of wood, it is also possible to make fiberglass feel like wood. On the best fiberglass products, the grain of the “wood” can actually be felt.

Not only is fiberglass the most effective material for insulating a door or window, and the least likely to bend and warp in extreme temperatures, it is also the most versatile in terms of appearance. You can create fiberglass doors which look like dark or light wood, and which fit in to any style of furnishings your home may have. You can make your internal doors match the rest of your furniture, in the knowledge that you are reducing the fire hazard, and helping to cut your fuel bills as well. Versatility is the hallmark of finishes with fiberglass wood.
